Binghamton Master Chimney Sweep keeps chimney sweep work in Chenango Bridge simple: we clean the chimney, inspect it while we're there, and take care of what it needs next, whether that's a liner for a fireplace insert, a new cap or crown repair. The first flue costs $250, inspection included.
Chenango Bridge is a settled place: about 1,250 homes where Route 12A crosses the Chenango River, mostly single-family and owner-occupied, with a median age near 47. People here tend to stay put, keep the fireplace going and do the maintenance. Here's what keeps us coming back.

Through the 1980s and 90s, lots of inserts were slid into fireplaces with a short pipe, or none, venting into the big fireplace flue. That was common practice then. Today's standards and stove makers call for a liner running from the insert all the way to the top of the chimney.
A full-length liner gives a stronger draft, less creosote and a flue we can actually sweep. If you can't see a metal pipe and cap at the top of your chimney, ask us to check on your next visit.
A fireplace insert is a stove that lives inside your fireplace. Its exhaust outlet is about six inches across. A typical masonry fireplace flue is three or four times that size. When the small, cool exhaust of an insert spills into that huge flue, it slows down, cools off and drops creosote all the way up. The draft gets lazy, the glass blackens, and the room smells smoky.
There's also the sweeping problem. An insert vented only into the smoke chamber leaves its creosote behind the insert, where nobody can reach it without pulling the whole unit out. A stainless liner connected directly to the insert's collar and run to a top plate and cap fixes all of it. We sweep a lined insert in the same visit as any other chimney.
For wood inserts we use a heavier stainless grade made for wood smoke, often insulated so it stays hot and drafts well. Gas inserts can use a lighter grade. We match the liner to what the insert's manual calls for.
Every sweep includes a basic inspection. When you're selling or buying, adding an insert or after a chimney fire, ask for the camera inspection, which shows the whole flue on a screen. More on our chimney inspection page.
Drop cloths down, the opening sealed, the flue brushed and vacuumed. For our sweeps the first flue is $250 and each additional flue is $150.
Sized to the appliance, with a top plate and rain cap, and insulated where the stove maker calls for it.
Stainless caps with mesh sides stop rain, leaves and animals. Along the Chenango, raccoons and birds are regular chimney guests.
Crown coat for hairline cracks, rebuilds for broken crowns, and repointing for washed-out joints.
Homes here don't change hands often, so when one does, the chimney has often gone a long time without a close look. Home inspectors shine a flashlight up the flue and write "recommend evaluation by a chimney professional." That's where we come in. We've seen sales held up for weeks over a chimney question that a 45-minute camera inspection could have answered on day one.
We charge $150 for an inspection without a sweep, and we write up what we find in plain words, with photos from the camera, so buyer, seller and both agents are reading the same thing.
Chenango Bridge sits in the same snow belt as the city, about 86 inches of snow a year and around 133 days below freezing. River fog keeps brick damp through the fall, and then the cold arrives. That combination is what breaks crowns and wears out mortar on the tops of chimneys, more than age alone.
If you notice brick bits on the roof, white streaks on the chimney or a damp spot on the ceiling beside it after a thaw, have the crown and cap checked. These are small repairs when caught early. Left for a few winters, they become a top rebuild.
From August through November our schedule fills up across the whole area. Chenango Bridge customers who call in spring or early summer get their pick of days, and any repair the inspection turns up gets done before the first real cold.

Most do. Current standards and nearly every insert maker call for a liner from the insert's outlet to the top of the chimney. Without one the draft is weak, creosote builds up behind the insert and the flue can't be swept properly. A full-length stainless liner usually runs $1,800 to $4,000 installed.
Most single-flue sweeps take 60 to 90 minutes, including setting up drop cloths, brushing, vacuuming and the inspection. A fireplace insert can add 30 minutes or more if it has to be pulled out to reach the flue. A second flue on the same chimney adds about half an hour.
